After a period of unease about the impact the shift to cloud would have on Microsoft’s highly profitable software licensing business, Wall Street has cheered that approach. Last month the company’s shares hit a 15 year high, after quarterly earnings that suggested its commercial cloud services were gaining momentum.
Microsoft has invested $2bn building its cloud infrastructure in Europe, and this week, committed to build two data centers in Germany to keep local customers’ information in trustworthy hands. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella added: “Our new data center[s] … offer customer’s choice and trust in how their data is handled and where it is stored.” The new data centers are in addition to the 24 regions throughout the world.
