Over the past several years Troy Stoneking (LRS instructor and author) has taught System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) classes many times. In fact he was involved in authoring three courses on the application for Microsoft Learning, including the development of a Small and Medium Business Essentials for System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager course supplement.
For SCOM 2012 R2 there are now two course options available from Microsoft Learning: the standalone MS10964 – Cloud & Datacenter Monitoring with System Center Operations Manager or a bundled course MS55156/10964 System Center Operations Manager for Enterprises and SMBs.
Having taught both the MS10964 and the predecessor course to MS55156 (M55004: Installing and Configuring System Center 2012 Operations Manager) we can say with assurance that there are two very different types of organizations in relation to SCOM. The first is the multinational enterprise with tens of thousands of client systems and several thousand servers. For these organizations MS10964 is a great course. It covers the basics of System Center Operations Manager along with topics that are only applicable in a very large environment.
The other type of organization is the small and medium business (SMB). The environment is completely different, the IT staff usually has a broader group of responsibilities and the number of managed systems is significantly lower. For SMBs the bundled course is the best solution. It replaces enterprise centric information with content specifically designed for use in small and medium businesses. In our experience we have yet to see a SMB use topics covered in the enterprise portion, but we have seen SMB students frustrated by a singular focus on enterprise topics.
Choosing between the two courses is a fairly simple manner. If you work in an enterprise environment choose the MS10964: Cloud & Datacenter Monitoring with System Center Operations Manager course offering. If you are in the SMB space choose the MS55156/10964 System Center Operations Manager for Enterprises and SMBs!
